The lower-ranking hyena (left) shows clear signs of submission, and retreats from two higher-ranking individuals. When hyenas meet after not having seen each other for several days or weeks, they show their dominance or submissive behaviour more explicitly than they would normally do in order to confirm the hierarchy.
